Föglö, 25 July 2019

Föglö, the "Bird Island", is a group of islands with 530 inhabitants. Two main marinas are located on Degerö, one of the island of the group. This is our second visit to Föglö, a convenient stopover on the way tp Mariehamn.

A view of the Degerby from the guest pier.

The approach through the pathway is straight forward.

Föglö marinas

Encounters on the way
Föglö became famous in 2010 when 145 bottles of champagne were found in the shipwreck a nineteen century schooner carrying goods to the imperial court of Russia. Among them 45 bottles of Veuve Clicquot, one of which sold for 30,000€ during an auction. These are the oldest existing bottles of champagne.

An impressive gaff-cutter going upwind in the pathway on sails only!

The Degerby old pilot station (and not a chapel as we thought coming from the sea...)

The Föglö church

and its votive ship, the Gudrun.
