As we departed from San Giorgio marina after three days, we engaged in a few mile ride to Poveglia lazaretto, on our way to Ravenna. It took us 3 hours to sail against some current to reach the place.
But we realised how much Poveglia Lazaretto is a significant place for epidemiologists!
The Poveglia island is off the coast of Lido, in the Venetian lagoon. There is a very nice anchoring place off the lazaretto that used to be located there. However, disembarking is not allowed to show respect to the victims of the plague epidemics buried here.
Originally, the place was an artillery fortress to defend the entrance of the Venezia lagoon. At he time of the plague epidemics, it became a quarantine station where in-coming boats should quarantine before getting in the Venezia lagoon. When the great plague epidemic stroke Venezia, Poveglia island became the place to dispose safely of the victimes of the great plague, meaning a crematorium for any one having presented or still presenting with clinical picture of plague. As of today, it is admitted that around 160,000 plague cases went burnt here, quite a few reported to having been burnt alive. If you ask ChatGpt the ranking of the most haunted places on earth, Poveglia island ranks 6, just before Paris catacombs!
Access to the island is not authorised to let the dead rest in peace. However we could witness how many boats were getting on land, in particular small boats full of teenagers playing loud music.
It is reported to be one of the most haunted place on earth because of this history. But we can confirm that we did not feel it as we were saying there.
Finally, Poveglia is just very close to Malamocco on Lido island, where Hugo Pratt, used to live. Such a star for French people of my generation! Corto Matese was born here!
