The return of spring in Utö - 4 - 6 May 2018

Spring is definitively back in the archipelago. Temperature up to 20°C on Sunday. In the boat on Friday after work for a night in Artipelag, on the way out. Long sail of 35 nm Saturday to go south west to Utö.

Passing Dalarö fort on the way back.
On the above picture, the Dalarö fort ("skans" on the sea chart) is on the left, and the Skraken island on the right.

Skraken is the one of the "ghost islands" where the cormorans are colonising every spring at the time of mating. "Skrak" in Swedish is the diving duck, while the cormorant is called "Skrav".

Cormorants are considered by some as an invasive species, and this could explain why the name of the island evolved from duck to cormorant. However, cormorants have been documented in the Baltic since the ice age, and therefore should probably not be considered invasive.

Currently, cormorants are busy setting-up the nest for their chicks to come.

There is a good presentation of the situation of cormorants in Sweden in this document from a fishermen association.

In a month time, the nest will be full of big chicks!
In the same area, benefiting from the strong winds between the island du to the venturi effect, we encounter a different type of OVNI (UFO in French), a pair of hydrofoils kite surfs. Amazing speed!

Back to Wasahamnen in the afternoon, in time for the departing cruisers that have now made it back from the Caribbean to the Baltic for the summer season.
