To Lavdara, 20 June 2023

Today, on our way to Pula, we sailed 34 nautical miles to the north-west. For the last few days the temperatures have been very hot and the winds have been "solar", meaning low intensity and coming from the direction of the sun all day. When you are under time pressure, you have to rely on the engine to keep up in such circumstances.

Such a long period of hot temperatures can only lead to an episode of bora, as the high temperature of the sea water calls for some cold winds to come down from the surrounding mountains as katabatic winds, called bora in Croatia...

We left Šibenik this morning and sailed through the St Anthony Channel.

The boat below is a Cornish Crabbers Pilot Cutter 30. The specifications can be found on the internet here. It is a 11.88 m boat. It looks like an old traditional boat, but in fact it is fibreglass and was built in 2015, just like Belisama!

Another appearance today, a Corsaire! An iconic 5.5m plywood boat built since 1954. This very bloat (840) was mentioned by Libération in December 2003 when it was exhibited at the Paris boat show. It was built by the Amiguet shipyards (Switzerland) in varnished mahogany.

Back to the Bora forecast after the current heat wave. On Windy, winds along the upper Dalmatian coast will reach 23 m/s (bft 9, 45 knots). We better hurry to Pula before early Saturday morning to avoid being caught in our first episode of bora! We will be watching the forecast over the next few days.

So far, in 2023, 1345 nm in seven weeks so far.
