Rönnskär, 14-15 July 2019

Rönnskär (63.061065, 20.804973) is a small set of islands in the outskirt of the Kvarken archipelago. The guest pier is not indicated in the Svenska Kryssar Klubb pilot book, but you can find the list of the guest harbours in the Kvarken outer archipelago on the Kvarken web site.

However, how to get there is a question...

Sailing in the Kvarken archipelago requires a detailed preparation of the route to be followed. A bit of Chausey without the tides even though the sea level does change significantly according to atmospheric pressure and wind direction.

On C-map, the approach is not very inviting with the pathway line on north-east going through a 1.5 m area. There seems to be a possibility from the north, but not clearly indicated. The East and West cardinal buoys on north in the 0-3 metres area does not state the depth.

On Navionics, the north-east pathway is indicated similarly, and the north pathway is drawn on the chart, but without clear indications of the water clearance.

On Eniro ("På Sjön" app), the north-east pathway is indicated with a clearance of 1 metre, and no clear indication on the north pathway. Not sure I would engage in it on this basis, des^pite the 5,5 and 3,5 metres indicated in the guest harbour...

On Sailmate, the pathways are very well indicated. A black line is a pathway, and the value indicated along the line in the brackets applies to the line until a new depth is indicated. A dotted line is a shallow pathway or a pathway without indications of the depth. On the east part of the north-east pathway, the line is dotted, with indication of one metre depth (just outside of this screen capture). The north pathway is indicated with a solid line indicating 2,4 metres in the bracket. It means that this depth is ensured all way long to the harbour. Note the angle used to draw the cardinal marks, clearly stating how to get around them.

On the basis of the review of all these nautical charts, we went there... Cheating a bit as in fact, we came to Rönnskär on the advice of François and Valérie and their post on Rönnskär.

On Fäliskäret, there is an old wooden service pier where a few boats can moor along side. The concrete pier is rented by a boat club from Vasa and reserved for them as Rönnskär is the back yard of Vaasa sailors.

As in most of these rocky islands, a wooden path is maintained, allowing moving around quite easily.

The wooden beacon on the island is the oldest wooden beacon in Finland, dating from 1784.

Our morning fika below...

Wild strawberries
... and our lunch
The egg...
and the boletus
The first boletus of the season. They are huge and fresh!

The boletus omelette for lunch. Delicious!

In the afternoon, I smoke a piece of fresh salmon bought in Vaasa the day before and prepare new graved lax with the rest, in prevision of the arrival of friends on board in the coming days. Smoked, you can keep it in the fridge for a good week and even more if packaged sous-vide. Delicious in the daily lunch salad while sailing.
