Kaskinen, a ghost town? 16 July 2019

With rain and no wind in Rönnskär on 15 July, we were ready to spend a second night there. However, the updated weather forecasted indicates a gale for 16 July. North-East winds, 10 to 12 m/s are forecasted for the night. Fearing to get trapped in Rönnskär during the gale, we decide to depart at 22:00 for an overnight 48 mile ride to Kaskö (Kaskinen). We arrive by 4:00 (8 knots on average), just in time for the sunrise and before the gale...

The arrival in Kaskinen (62.384382, 21.218934) is straight forward, with possibility to moor alongside as we are only two boats in the large guest harbour (50 visitor berths!).

Kaskinen is the smallest town in Sweden with 1800 inhabitants. The pilot guidebook report Kaskö as an "idyllisk" place. Indeed, the old town centre exhibits nice wooden houses with sophisticated architecture. Note the gale passing by with dark clouds.

Very nice and interesting indeed, but where have disappeared the inhabitants? Even in the streets one cannot see any cars. The local museum is only opened on Wednesdays and Sundays for three hours. Too bad, we are Tuesday! Are they all on vacation?

The only human figure that we see is the small statue of a lady looking at a solar clock in the park.

In the periphery of Kaskö is a sawmill built in 1788 on the model of the Dutch windmills. It was moved to its current location in 1954.
