A weekend in Brijuni

Even though our house is located just along the coast to Brijuni National Park, we never stopped there because of the "unrealistic prices" for a night in the Brijuni marina, namely 270€ per night for a boat like Belisama.

Yet, with a full load of people on board, like 8 of us with nephews and grand nephews on board, it made sense since the boat mooring cost includes the 35€ entrance to the National Park.

So we went in...
Brijuni Island was the summer residence of Tito. It is the place where the "Brijuni meeting" took place, in July 1956. I was just born! While pictures of all delegations attending the meeting on the island are displayed in the museum, not much is presented to let us understand what were the issues at( stake at the time and what was the vision of Tito and what was achieved through the meeting. A lost opportunity to acknowledged Tito's contribution to a more balanced world of powers!

For the rest, Brijuni is a very clean National Park with nicely maintained landscape, yet looking quite a bit artificial, but worth the entrance amount given the overall maintenance.

An important task for Brijuni was to eliminate malaria from the islands. Having read in the newspaper that Dr. Koch intended to carry out research on malaria in Italy, Kupelwieser, the owner of Brijuni, wrote him a letter with his observations about the disease. Shortly after, Koch sent his collaborators and he himself visited the islands twice in 1900/1901. He discovered that that the cause of malaria was the anopheles mosquito. His interventions resulted with the elimination of malaria through the use of larvae eating Gambusia fishes and the control of breeding sites.

While overall Brijuni was a good experience, the heat wave made it difficult. But overall, the impression  was a taste of too little for what Brijuni represented politically at the time.
