First miles in the Mediterranean, to Almerimar, 5 & 6 October 2022

We did not stay long in Gibraltar as there are still lots of miles ahead of us, and the forecast is indicating mostly headwinds in the coming days. As we get in the Mediterranean, we go around the Trinity Lighthouse at Europa Point before heading west towards Almerimar.

We therefore decided to skip Malaga and focus on heading through the bay to the various capes along the coast...
Almerimar was advised for us as a stop over on the way by neighbours in the Gibraltar marina. They indicated a large cheap marina, well located and well serviced, which will prove to be very true! We enjoyed it a lot.

The journey was supposed to be 130 nautical miles in straight line but ended-up being 162 miles taking into account the tacking required because of head winds. Note that the tacking involved at around 60° rather than 90° in normal circumstances. This is related to strong currents heading east in the"Alboran sea". It took us around 24 hours to get through.

Our track through the "Alboran sea"

Going around the Trinity lighthouse and the most, and heading east to enter the Mediterranean.

A bit further, we get a nice view of the Gibraltar Rock.

Couple of impressive encounters on the way

Arriving in Almerimar marina the following morning
