A most welcome stopover in A Coruña, 7-11 September

We depart 7:00 in the morning for a day ride from Burela to A Coruña. Nice weather expected, but very low head winds requiring using the engine all the way in order not to arrive at night.

The only encounter we make is a school of dolphin very busy fishing as we can notice from the sea birds accompanying them. Yet, we have now entered in the area where Orcas had a lot of interactions with boats. To prepare for this possibility, we have consulted the safety protocol issued by the Spanish Orca association. Basically, should you encounter an Orca, stop everything, drop sails, let rudder free, don't get agitated, and the orcas are likely to loose interest in interacting with such a passive boat.

Just a small dolphin...

The coast in this part of Galicia looks particularly inhospitable.

A Coruña is located in a very large bay. On the way in, we come across a group of Nato ships. Impressive as always...

At the southern entrance of the bay is located the "Tower of Hercules", a lighthouse built by the romans in the first century. It is the oldest lighthouse in the world still functioning. It is a Unesco Heritage site worth visiting if you don't mind the 55 metre high stairs to reach the top.

A Coruña is a very pleasant city, with lots of coffee shops and restaurant in the old city.

A specificity of the houses in A Coruña are houses with wall-to-wall glassed-in balconies. This is meant to enjoy the light inside while preventing exposure to wind and rain. A Coruña has been called the glass city fr this.

The food is really good in Galicia and we are spoiled for choice.

Pilgrim cheese called the "El camino del Gozo" (The path of joy) is a delicious tender pressed pasta cheese, made from pasteurized cow’s milk.
