A weekend through the solar system, 30 October-1 November

What to do in a dull cloudy cold first weekend of November? We decided to go to Hudiksval, the main city in Hälsingland province, 300 km from home a place that we visited twice with Belisama, but never ventured in the countryside. While searching for spots to visit, we realised that several planets of the Sweden Solar System (SSS) are located along the way.

The Sweden Solar System is the largest representation of the solar system planets in the world, centered around Globen in Stockholm, representing the Sun and its corona...

Globen is located south of Stockholm. With a diameter of 110 meters, it is the largest hemispheric structure in the world. In the SSS, Globen represents the Sun on the scale of 1:20 million. All other planets are represented at the scale of Globen and located at a distance corresponding to the scale.

The earth is located at the entrance of the space theatre Cosmonova at the Natural History Museum, at 7.6 km from Globen. At the scale 1:20 million, the moon is located 20 m apart from earth.

Jupiter, the gazeous planet is located 40 km from Globen at the entrance of the Clarion hotel conference centre, in Arlanda airport. The four moons of Jupiter are represented in the corridor leading to the hotel.

Located 146 km from Globen is Uranus. The model was built in steel by the workshop at the Forsmark nuclear plant located closeby in reference with the use of the uranium metal in the plant.

Neptune is located 229 km from Globen in Söderhamn, symbolizing the God of the water and the sea.

Further north, is Pluto, a dwarf planet and Charon, one of its five moons, located in an area struck by a meteorite 90 million years ago. Pluto, in the Greek mythology, is the God of the death and of the underworld. For this reason, Pluto is at times referred to as the God of wealth, by controlling access to underground ores. The columns are made of dellenite, the rock in the area of Dellen resulting from the impact of the meteorite.

In June 2019, we had a chance to meet Ixion in Härnösand, one of the Trans-Neptunian objects.

I should admit that it is quite puzzling to see all these planets on the scale of Globen. It takes four hours by car to get from Stockholm to Härnösand. At the real scale 1:20 millions, it would take 80 million hours for such a journey! All together, there are over 20 planets and asteroids represented in the SSS. We will be chasing more in the future, and update the post!
