Unexpected need for surgery, 4 June 2021

Belisama was put off water today for unplanned surgery on her left hip. This may take a couple of weeks, and for now, we are all land-borne! Two years ago, Belisama struck a rocky shoal without apparent damage as she was behaving as always, without an apparent hitch on the rudder. Since then, we cruised for more than 2500 nautical miles without problems.

But once the Alubat expert looked at it, it became apparent that the hit resulted in more that just a litlle bending on the rudder post...

It looks like a one or two degree bending on the rudder shaft, and therefore, I thought and was told that it would not be difficult to fix while the boat is off waters for careening.

The 1°/2° bending of the rudder shaft

The inspection of the hull from inside by the Alubat expert was determinant. Looking at the rudder posts, it became clear that hitting the rock not only slightly bent the rudder shaft, but deformed as well the rudder post inside. The picture below shows the starboard rudder post (jaumière in French). Note that all the round openings in the rudder post are in the same plan, presenting with the same shape. Therefore this one is fine.

Starboard rudder post, Ok

Yet, on the Portside rudder post, the same round openings do not look like being in the same plan anymore. There was some bending resulting from the hit on the shoal. Tyvärr would say the Swedes!

She is then due for Portside hip surgery in the coming weeks, before being able to continue her move to the Mediterranean.

We will keep you posted!
