Pite-Rönnskär, 25 June 2019

Pite Rönnskär (65.036346, 21.55612)is an island in the Bottenviken located at the border between the provinces of Västerbotten and Norrbotten. The small harbour is well inside the less than 3 metre depth of the nautical charts, and even of the 0.5 metre of the Navionics sonar charts. Yet, there is an alignment to reach the harbour safely, at least for an OVNI with the centre board up. Room for 2/3 boats on the pier.

The island was a fishing village for centuries. Today, there remain 30 fishermen houses that are now used as summer cottages.

Given its location at the south of the pathway to Piteå, a lighthouse was erected in Pite Rönnskär in 1905. With 37 metre of height, it is the tallest of the lighthouses conceived by Nils Gustaf von Heidenstam. The lighthouse ceased activities in 1970, but was reactivated in 2005 for its 100 anniversary.

The chapel dates 1771. At the time Pite-Rönnskär was a fishing site, the chapel was visited twice a year by a priest. The bell on the chapel was used as well to indicate when in the morning the time it was allowed to go fishing.
