A visit to Carl Eldh, 6/8 September

On 6 September, I paid a long due visit to the "Ateljémuseum" of Carl Eldh in Stockholm, the "other" famous sculptor of the XX century, with Carl Milles.

The place is a heaven of peace, full of history and emotion. One place not to be missed while in Stockholm!

Below is the rotunda, with objects, drawing and paintings that were decorating Carl Eldh's ateljé.

Carl Eldh, contrarily to most sculptors, kept all his studies of sculptures. They are on display in the museum and are most interesting.

You can recognise two of the most famous sculptures of Carl Eldh, the danse and the song,
which are both on the water front in the City hall.

Below is Saint Ansgar, the guy who is in the Ansgar chapel in Birka, which I visited couple of weeks ago while sailing in the Mälaren. Interestingly, this sculpture is very close to the St. Francis of Assisi sculpture of Carl Millés in Milles Garden.

Below is "the youth" sculpture, the one most represented in Stockholm cities throughout the country. Moving indeed.

Carl Eldh has represented Strindberg in a few of his sculpture e.g. the titan, the writer... Below are two of the portrait studies for these sculptures.

Carl Eldh was studying in Paris with Auguste Rodin at the turn of the XXth century, pretty much at the same time Carl Millés was. From that period are a few pieces that are along the same inspiration line as for Millés, depicting street life in Paris.

The sculpture "douleur d'une mère" won the gold medal at the Paris salon in 1902, giving Carl Eldh fame and a boost to his career.

Carl Eldh sculptures can be seen in may places inStockholm as well as in many cities throughout the country. He is with Carl Milles probably the most well know sculptor in Sweden. Below are a few samples of his most famous sculpture in Stockholm.
