Mässkär, Kummelskär, 11-12 July 2019

After the two days in Tankar, we continue our descente along the cost of Finland in the Bottenviken through two small interesting islands, Mässkär and Kummelskär, in the pouter Kvarken's archipelago.

Departing from Tankar

Mässkär (63.727741, 22.579672)

Mässkär is a small island at the entrance of the pathway leading to Jakobstad (Pietarsaari). Because of its geographical location, Mässkär was a pilot and a toll collecting station for many years. The Finnish State owns the northern part of the island, which is managed by the Metsähallitus company. It runs a café, accommodation, small conference centre, and above all,the sauna.

The approach to the guest harbour is well marked using green and red buoys. The harbour is two to three metre deep and two metres along the south jetty. The space along the southern side of the south jetty is relatively narrow and we got trouble to get out of it with significant lateral northern winds. We had to manoeuvre out using a combinaison of mooring lines and the bow thruster.

There is a nice nature path well documented and offering a nice exposure to all sorts of mosquitoes.

In the centre of the northern part off the island, there are remains of the old fishermen village, with ruins of huts that are now several metres above the sea level.

Kummelskär (63.460051, 21.77325)

Twenty-seven nautical miles further on the south west is Kummellskär, in the Kvarken outer archipelago. The approach is straight forward when observing the alignments with attention. The small jetty allows for ten boats mooring with stern buoys. It is two metre deep inside the jetty and three to five outside.

Kummelskär arose because of the land uplift in the XVI century. There is a nature station, former coast guard station in the harbour, providing accommodation as well as a summer café and of course a sauna. A nature path goes around the island.

The navigation in these shallow waters requires full attention, at is involves a mix of cardinal buoys, lateral buoys and alignments.
